With the arrival of great spring weather and our "last freeze dates" past, it's time to get very excited about finding the "right" annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees (etc.) to enhance our landscapes and properties.
As helpful reminders:
(1) Check the container or pot of your garden item (to be purchased) and inspect the root system. Lift the plant from the container (or pot). What do you see?
The root system may be the most important part of the plant. You will want to know that the plant you will be buying is healthy. A "healthy" plant has white, healthy roots; it has roots which are not entangled and aged in the pot or container.
(2) Also, a reminder about "Best Practices" : Right Plant, Right Place.
Think about the shrub, tree, ornamental grass purchase, etc. and review the future, mature size (height and width) of the plant and review the location where you may intend to install this when you take it home. Will it fit? Consider the selected site. Do you have full sun? shade?
By thinking through these simple but important matters, you will have saved great time and energy. Your landscape will display the quality and balance of thougtful and educated plant selections and site selections.
Good Gardening!
