12 Tasks to Tackle This Fall

Prepare your home for the impending cooler weather now, while the weather is still pleasant.

The evenings are growing chillier and the days are getting shorter. Now that fall has arrived, it's time to consider preparing your home and yard for the upcoming seasonal changes. To prepare your house for the next cool days, complete these 12 tasks.

Exterior Preparation
1. Repair concrete and asphalt cracks.
Depending on where you live, these could be the final few weeks of this year that are warm and sunny enough to patch cracks in sidewalks and driveways.

2. Clean out the gutters
No one likes doing this work, but we all have to do it once a year. A few hours of work now can avoid significant issues later.

Visually inspect your roof for broken shingles, flashing, or vents while you're up there on the ladder. Additionally, you can check the chimney for any missing mortar and, if necessary, fix it by tuck-pointing.

3. Deactivate outdoor plumbing
Draining and covering outdoor sprinklers and faucets will safeguard them from the upcoming freezing weather.

4. Begin composting.
Now is the time to create or purchase compost containers if you don't already have any. You'll reap the gardening rewards of all those piled fall leaves next year!

5. Clean outdoor furniture and gardening tools
Clean your garden equipment and outdoor furniture even if it may not be time to store them just yet so they are prepared for the winter.

6. Plant bulbs for flowers that bloom in spring
When the soil has cooled down in October, plant bulbs for a great spring harvest. If this is your first time planting bulbs, choose a location in your yard that receives direct sunlight all day.

Interior preparation
7. Get your furnace ready for winter use.
Consider having your furnace professionally serviced in time for the winter season if you didn't already do it in the spring. Before you begin using your furnace every day, at the very least, physically inspect it and change the furnace filter.

8. Clean the chimney and fireplace.
Make sure the doors and shields are in good condition, clean the fireplace, and check the flue. If necessary, hire a professional to clean the chimney. Stocking up on firewood is also a good idea right now!

9. Maintain the frigid air outside and the warm air within.
Examine your doors and windows. By opening a door, putting a piece of paper in the entrance, then shutting the door, you can check the weatherstripping. The paper shouldn't be able to readily move forth and back. If so, the weather stripping isn't functioning properly. Re-caulking around window and door casings, if necessary, should also be done immediately.

10. Lighten the path
In order to make your home as bright as possible throughout the darker, colder months. Clean your windows and blinds, especially in places that receive a lot of sunlight, to emphasize natural light. By installing new lamps, illuminate dim areas. And think about switching out conventional incandescent light bulbs for energy-efficient ones.

11. Build a mudroom.
It's a good idea to consider organizing and stocking an entryway that will function as a "mudroom" area for cold and wet weather even if your home doesn't have a dedicated mudroom. Place an indoor/outdoor rug on the floor to protect it. Building a wooden coat rack, storage bench, or shoe rack for your doorway is a satisfying and enjoyable weekend project.

12. Check for home safety
Your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors need new batteries. Always changing the batteries when you adjust the clock for daylight saving time is an excellent method to keep this in mind. Develop a family fire escape plan, or test your current one. Create an emergency supply kit to ensure that you are prepared for any winter power disruptions.

Once your fall home checklist is complete, you may spend the season in your cozy, comfy home.
